Fillers – Spillers – Thrillers!

Curious?  You had to be there to appreciate that title.  MPWC’s after-meeting program on February 12 was a primer on floral design put on by the Green Cove Springs Garden Club.  Not only did members learn a few botanical terms, like Alstroemeria, commonly called the Peruvian lily, but they were also were treated to a hands-on lesson in making individual designs. Who knew you could use small sago palm fronds, variegated ginger, or bush clippings as tall fillers? Spillers are those draping green plants that add some grace and flair to the presentation.  And for the thriller, you need to some pretty flowers you may find in your garden like camellias, black eyed Susans, yellow or red firecrackers, fox tail fern, and even variegated ginger.  A discussion on floral foam for wet or dry use was also part of the discussion.  Who knew it mattered which you used for what!

Thank you to the Activities Committee for providing this fun afternoon with Master Gardeners Connie Gladding, Gretchen Falk, Rhona Scoville and our own Barbara Coker.
