No, I wasn’t arrested! Did you ever wonder if the S.O.S. option on your smart watch works? Or if there really is a GPS option in the watch? Or what it takes to set the option off?
I was at book club at Denise Beauchamp’s last night sitting quietly listening to comments when my phone went off as an S.O.S. and the watch face turned red. I tapped it (maybe too many times) as I heard a voice talking to me through the watch. I hurried out of the room as the voice on the watch kept asking me if I was OK. I kept saying that I was, and to cancel the S.O.S. The voice said I couldn’t and she had to report me, so I gave my name and address. Her response was she was sending the police to my house and because I was not home, I kept saying no don’t do that! I thought I was pretty clear so I went back to the conversation with a little egg on my face for not responding to the watch message properly. Supposedly, there is an option to cancel when you mistakenly get the S.O.S. and red face on the watch. Crisis averted or so I thought.
Back to the book club conversation. Ten minutes later there was a knock on the door and two nice police were at the door looking for me. I had to prove I was OK. I asked how they found me at Denise’s. They said they had my phone pinged. We thanked Patrolman Heard and Whitney for showing up but we didn’t need their services.
There are a few takeaways from this. Yes, if you buy a smartwatch with a GPS in it, it works and so does the S.O.S. notice… but be sure you press ‘dismiss’ if you really haven’t fallen (duh). Sandy Waldrup tried to demonstrate by taking off her smart watch and throwing it on the floor for a demonstration, but you might know that the S.O.S. did not go off. Go figure.
As to why my smart watch went off, well, it may have happened when I moved my wrist to pick up my wine glass . It was an informative and funny night!
